Problem fixed: Shift lever seals and impeller needed replacement
Best tip I received from another site was to use a ratchet strop to hold bottom leg as I eased it off the engine and also when I had to reposition it with exhaust, water drive shaft and shift.

Problem fixed: Traces of water in gearbox
Propeller seals were replaces last season, so main suspect was driveshaft seal and/or shift rod o-ring. Suspicion confirmed after removal of water pump: traces of oil found around driveshaft seal. 1) Removal of lower unit (requires to remove lower cowling) 2) Removal of water pump (4 screws) 3) Removal of shift rod cover (6 screws) 4) Removal of driveshaft bearing (4 screws). Bearing removed by gently prying with flatheaded screwdriver Replacement of: * 2 driveshaft seals (upper + lower). Old ones gently chisseled out with screwdriver. New ones installed with suitable size socket-wrench socket and hammer. * shift rod cover o-ring * driveshaft bearing o-ring * waterpump gasket * shift rod cover gasket Reinstalled everyting in reverse order of removal. Note: It is important to adjust the shift rod height (see manual)

Problem fixed: replacing waterpump and shift rod o rings
To remove the tail section I disconnected the fuel pump because to access the tiny screw at the undersize of the engine is a bit a pain in the ass ,to loosen the shifter .There is almost no space to get an easy access All the other bolts came loose easy. Disconneted all the bolts fromthe waterpump and the shifter cover .The 2 o rings on the shifter were torn and they sticked to the shifter rod so it was hard to get in gear.Replaced pump and all the rubbers and gaskets .Did some extra grease after cleaning the gasket space and also did some extra on the bolts.I maked sure that the distance of the shifter top to bottom was the same as when I turned it loose .Then replaced the tail to the motor and connected the fuel pump and the rubber lines .All worked fine again and getting in gear was very smoothly now.

Purchased twenty year old Bass boat w/ low hrs. (115) on engine. Bought gear case seal kit , impeller and a new water pick up screen from CM and dropped parts along with lower unit off at my mechanic. 8 days from the time I hit the "buy" button till I picked up my lower unit from my Mechanic ! Beat that NASCAR !
