Problem fixed: Running rough and making a lot of internal motor noise
I purchased an older second hand Mercury 40HP 4 cylinder outboard motor that was running very poorly and making a lot of unusual noises. On inspection the root cause of the problem was caused by salt water in the fuel tank that had got all through the engine, everywhere. It sat for over 2 years in the sun prior to me buying it and with condensation etc and not being run is what damaged all of the internals of the engine. The crankshaft, con rods, rollers bearings, upper, middle and lower main bearings had all been attacked by water, they were all corroded and pitted, the carbs were also a mess etc. Looking back on the project I should have written it off. It’s taken some time to get it to this stage and with the help from Crowley Marine with their excellent advice, excellent pricing and shipping costs to New Zealand the motor is now almost complete and ready to run.
