Problem fixed: Wouldn't start
Changed out the starter and starter solenoid with Johnson/evinrude replacements. I would recommend using name brand parts. Used an after market starter in 2019 which failed in a short period of time.

Problem fixed: Convert long shaft to short shaft
My daughter and wife couldn’t pull start my old faithful 1959 Johnson 20 hp. I converted an Evinrude 20 hp long shaft with electric start to a short shaft to fit my tinnie. I needed to replace the power head gasket, water pump, rectifier and neutral safety switch on the 1987 Evinrude and am considering redoing the lower unit seals and bearings. Was a winter Covid project to keep busy in the colder months. Last few bugs to work out and we will have a much newer easy starting motor on the little cottage boat! Sad that the old girl is getting replaced, she starts for me on the first pull every time..but happy spouse -happy house!

Problem fixed: I was getting a High Temp Alarm when I would push it a bit. This is after I had changed the Water Pump and was getting great pressured flow. So I decided to change out the temperatures switches (2) and the thermostats (2).
Unable to find time for repairs at this time. So, I'm not sure if I have made to correct diagnosis.

Problem fixed: Solenoid problems and weak spark
Was jumping solenion to start motor. Then no spark. Read that the solenoid might cause the spark problem by shorting back through the ignition. Sure enough, new solenoid, starter works and spark. Also charging better.

All I had to do was remove the old solenoid and install the new one. A simple task. One tip is to label all electrical connections as you disconnect them to ensure that it is installed properly, especially if it is not done on the same day.

Problem fixed: Engine difficult to start, slow to no cranking
This is an old, old engine; the starter commutator was burned, the main battery cables were internally corroded, the stater solenoid was defective and the solenoid to starter cable was internally burned. Repair involved: 1. Removal of starter, starter solenoid (mark all wires where they came from), starter cable and main battery cables. 2. Replacement battery cables, I used 4 AWG, cut them to length and use only copper 4 AWG crimp terminal lugs. Do not solder the connectors on. Put 'no-ox' or equivalent anti-corrosion paste in the end of the lug and on any exposed wire, then put either heat shrink or electrical tape over the lug shaft and at least 3 inches of the cable. 3. Install new start solenoid. 4. Inspect and Clean the stater motor: a. Disassemble the starter b. Clean starter housing, armature, brushes and brush plate with a non-flammable solvent. Wipe and blow dry all pieces c. Using medium (180) then fine (800) sandpaper, clean the commutator until it is shiny copper. d. IMPORTANT: Use the "back" of a utility knife blade to clean out the slots between each commutator segment. Then blow out. e. Reassemble the starter. 5. Re-install the starter. 6. Double check the wiring is connected correctly. WARNING: Installing the solenoid wiring incorrectly can cause severe damage to the engine, starter, solenoid and battery. A fire is even likely. 7. Remove the spark plugs. 8. Test crank the motor to ensure all works well and correctly 9. Re-install the spark plugs 10. Test start the motor.
