Problem fixed: Lower unit wouldn't shift
Both outboard motors had shifting shifting issues. The 1977 motor was stuck in reverse, the 1990 motor was stuck in forward. Not a major job to carry out repairs. Several good videos on how to repair the lower unit on U-tube.

Pulled lower unit make sure it is in gear. Disconnect shift linkage. Drop lower unit make sure to keep shaft in place..remove the four bolts from water pump housing.. slowly lift housing taking care to not lose the ground key stock pin. It will be in the impeller or on the shaft. Remove old impeller. Cleanup all surface. Apply a very light layer of OEM lowering grease to a mating surfaces. Put a dab on the shaft key and key way stock to hold it in place a u slide housing onto shaft. Tighten bolts Replace out put grommet and shaft o rings and align output tube with grommet. As you put lower unit into place reconnect linkage. While applying upward pressure make sure the shft is aligned the lower unit will snap up to t2 bolts in to hold in place then push up while wiggling and put into neutral. the lower unit should snap onto place... bolt up and change lower unit gear oil.. making sure the sealing washers are good if in doubt replace. Recomend to tank test rather than clappers.. run up to temp making sure the telltale hole is spoutting water.

Problem fixed: Would not run more than 10 seconds/ no cooling water
Rebuilt water pump first, rebuilt carburetor next. It took a little ingenuity to get the carb mounted again. The one mounting stud is pretty hard to get to. All put back together and she started on the sixth pull, after being stored for three full years. Made me feel like I might be able to fix a rainy day. (You got a parts kit for that?)

Problem fixed: No water was coming out of the engines cooling line,
I looked up on U-Tube on how to repair and replace the impeller, then I ordered the Impeller. When the part came in I took the lower end off and realized while replacing the Impeller, that the rubber tube (Grommet) that connected the two units water line together was torn as well. So I had to order that and wait. Once that came in, it was a quick job, other than putting the screw back into the Shifting Rod. That was left out of all the U-Tube Videos. I slipped it in-between the two casings and let it sit the crack between the two units, then l pushed the units together until the grove in the Shifting Rod was in place. Then pick up the screw from the crack with needle nose pliers and placed it in the hole, then screwing it in with a screw driver and then pushed the two units together. While I was pushing the two unit back together I also made sure and watched the New Rubber Grommet go into the Water Tube. The only thing I would have done differently was maybe order the whole re-builded kit and replace everything for like $25-30 more. My lower unit it exceptionally clean. No mud in it or salt water use. Looks like new still inside. It was my fathers since new and now I have the pleasure of owning it. At Crowley I also ordered a Slow Speed Adjustment Knob. I never thought I would ever find one on a 1985 model but as I was looking at the parts list I saw it and ordered one. I don't know how long the other one was missing but it's been many years. Now everything is working fine. Good light for looking inside will be a great help to you when you are putting it back together, Thanks Crowley

Problem fixed: Water pump impeller
Remove bolts holding lower unit housing. Housing will drop slightly, exposing the shift rod holding clamp. Fully remove the bolt and the complete housing will drop down. Remove bolts from impeller housing and lift off cover. Slide off old impeller, be careful not to lose the key pin. Support the housing, so the lower unit oil won't drain off. Sand paper the housing surface to smooth up and apply a thin film of oil to aid in sliding the impeller in. The impeller is a tight fit and will try to pop out. Start one side and work around to get the fins to all slide in. Slide on shaft, do not forget the drive pin. It lays in a flat milled section on the shaft to engage the impeller. Reinstall impeller housing bolts. Slide housing shaft back up and engage into the splines. You can rotate the prop to help line up. The shift rod will slide into the coupling. Reinstall the collar bolt. There is a milled half slot in the shaft to allow the bolt to slide in. Tighten the bolt on the collar. Finish sliding the housing back to the upper unit and reinstall the bolts.Be careful not to over torque the bolts, the housing is cast and over tightening can crack the housing. Water test to make sure the impeller is working properly.
