Problem fixed: Prop shaft seal damaged by fishing line
I was removing my 4 blade s/s props to fit the original alu props for freshwater use whn I saw some fishing line stuck behind the starboard engine prip collar. Upon closer inspection thenline had melted into the rubber of the seal and damaged the lip. Googled how to change the. Seal including hacks to do it without pulling the entire prop bearing assembly but decides to do it as per the manual for fear of hurting the prop shaft -the ETEC 50 had a small shaft and there is not much space to try the “hack” method. Ordered thenparts from Crowley which included shaft seals and the bearing assembly o-rings. Had to get the OMC puller off of EBay (we use metric threads in SOuth Africa) to pull the bearing carrier out. Anyway, all done, all fixed and back on the water!

Problem fixed: visibly worn prop shaft seal, few drops of water visible when draining lower unit. Engine possibly running hot as well
Barn-find engine that had not been run or serviced for 15+ years. I was glad to find Crowley Marine as a source for information and parts, they will definity be my go-to source based on my first experience buying parts from them. First repair is water pump replacement and full lower unit seal replacement. The only special tool I needed was a seal puller, otherwise this job can be completed with typical shop tools. Loosen bolts slowly to avoid breaking any stuck ones. Lots of videos online showing how to do this job.
