TO THE OWNER: This kit should be installed by a skilled technician. If
you have questions, see your DEALER.
Note: To prevent damage to tilt tube DO NOT clamp tilt tube in a vise, or hold with a pipe wrench or any type pliers.
To hold tilt tube with a wrench, temporarily install two 7/8-14 UNF nuts (3 cyl. flywheel nut) on one end of the tube. Tighten nuts against each other.
Install locknut (A) on opposite end of tilt tube (B). Tighten locknut until it bottoms out on the threads. Make sure a minimum of 5/8 in. thread (C) is exposed beyond nut for attaching steering cable anchor nut. Remove two temporary nuts and install spacer (D) on tube.
Lay motor on its back. Remove and discard the following: Tilt bolt locknut (E), flat washer (F), tilt bolt (G), anchor tab (H), locking tab (I) and stern bracket bushings (J). The carrying handle bushing (K) will be pushed out when installing tilt tube.
Note location of spacer washers (L) for reassembly.
Align tilt tube with stern bracket depending on which entry steering will be used. Hold carrying handle (A) in position as you push and twist tilt tube. If tube doesn't move smoothly check position of spacer washers and handle. DO NOT Force! Discard carrying handle bushing. Make sure spring holds carrying handle DOWN.
Install spacer (B) and locknut (C) onto tilt tube. Hold other nut with wrench and torque locknut to 50-54 ft. lbs. (68-73 Nm) and loosen 1/4 revolution. Lubricate tilt tube fittings with Triple-Guardâ grease.
Definite resistance to turning must be felt when
installing a locking fastener. Replace any fastener with weak locking action.
LOCK TILLER HANDLE
When motor is connected to a remote steering system, the tiller handle must be locked UP, using the screw provided. If the handle should drop DOWN, it could interfere with the motor tilting and turning.
Raise tiller handle UP to expose the threaded hole in the steering arm. Install 1/4-20 x 1/2 in. fillister head screw (A) and lock washer (B) provided. Tighten screw securely.
ADJUST STEERING FRICTION
Release the steering friction when motor is connected to a remote steering system.
Loosen steering friction screw (C) just enough to allow the motor to turn freely.
