Neutral Start Switch Kit

The assembly procedures outlined in this sheet should be performed by a
skilled technician. If you have questions, see your DEALER. Save these
instructions in your owner's kit. This sheet contains information important to
the future use and maintenance of your engine.

Give this sheet to the owner. Advise the owner of any special operation or
maintenance information contained in the instructions.
This kit is used on 1993 (ET) and newer 9.9/15 remote start models to provide start-in-gear prevention when using a remote control without a neutral start switch.

To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing, twist and remove all spark plug leads. On electric start models, disconnect the battery cables at the battery.
If motor is equipped with a shift lever with a neutral start switch cam, replacement of original shift lever is not required.
Attach neutral start switch (2) to the switch bracket (4), as shown. Install two screws (5), locknuts (6) and tighten securely.
Remove shift lever screw, washer, bushing, and shift lever (A). Remove shift lever link (B) from lever. Discard shift lever.
Reinstall shift lever link into new shift lever (3).
Loosen upper coil screw. Install slotted end of switch bracket between screw and flat washer. Line up bracket bottom hole with throttle lever hole. Install bushing, shift lever, washer, and screw (C). Hand tighten both mounting screws.
Remove port side lower motor cover.
Remove yellow/red stripe wire (D) from solenoid. Save washer and nut.
Cut ring off yellow/red stripe wire.
Strip back insulation 1/4 in. (6.3 mm) and install sleeve (7) onto wire.
Crimp socket terminal (8) onto wire.
Connect bullet terminal on lead assembly (1) to the socket terminal just installed. Pull sleeve over connection.
Attach ring terminal on lead assembly (10 to solenoid screw (A). Reinstall washer and nut, tighten nut securely. Coat solenoid terminal with Black Neoprene Dip.
Apply isopropyl alcohol to the lead assembly connector and to switch assembly plug. Align plug and connector flat areas and connect together. Secure with retainer (9).
Reinstall lower motor cover.
Place wires and connector in lower cover in a position that will not
interfere with any moving part or other engine components.
Test Neutral Start Switch
Turn propeller shaft and put motor in FORWARD. Attempt to start motor with start button or key switch.
Turn propeller shaft and put motor in REVERSE. Attempt to start motor with start button or key switch.
If motor starts in gear; Adjust neutral start switch closer to shift lever cam, and retest.
Torque coil mounting screw to 48-96 in. lbs. (5,4-10,8 Nm).
Tighten shift lever mounting screw securely.
