Problem fixed: Replaced poppet valve diaphragm
Water was leaking from t-stat housing weep hole. Ordered diaphragm and housing gasket. Several of the bolts were very difficult to remove as aluminum oxide had built up it the through-drilled bolt holes in the cover.

Problem fixed: Primer pump would not prime. Tough to start.
I removed the carb and then the bowl / primer pump from the carb. I then removed the primer pump diaphragm. I installed the new parts from the kit and put it all back together. After pulling the primer / choke out the motor started on the first pull. It has been perfect ever since.

Problem fixed: Would not start
It would start when I used a spritzer to squirt mixed fuel into the carb. I found the primer mechanism was locked up and would not squirt fuel into the carb. Ordered a primer repair kit and and replaced the primer parts. The old parts were very stiff and I could not even depress the primer button. Cold motor now starts very easily after using the prime knob.

Problem fixed: Stalling, fuel leaking, bad idle.
Remove carb. When taking apart primer that is off to the side with plastic plunger, be carefull. It is spring loaded and there is a small steal ball that will drop out. There is a small rubber cap over plunger post that gets hard and causes all the problems. Mine broke off in pieces. Just take your time. Mine runs like new again. Don't understand why Mercury doesn't put instructions in with kits like OMC.

Leaking shaft log required lifting the boat out at Jolley Harbor, Antigua. Leaks were detected at the mounting of the shaft packing to the shaft log. Once the packing gland was pulled forward away from the shaft log it was also evident the log was cracked as well. All packing and bedding material was removes and cleaned with acetone. A large area around the forward end of the shaft log was cleaned up with a right angle grinder and additional material was scraped clear using chisels. Some delamination was also ground away. The packing gland was reinstalled using Life Seal. The shaft log was made with a pilot to center the gland. Once the gland was in place 14 layers of glass and epoxy were laid to cover the damaged area on the shaft log and to reinforce the assembly. New packing was installed after the life seal and epoxy were cured. The boat was pulled on Friday and splashed on Monday AM. It hung in the sling for the weekend. Results are a dry bilge. Problem fixed: raw gas sprayed out of vent hole in primer housing.
Old Mercury 2 stroke, 8 HP motor wouldn't start without carb cleaner sprayed into throat, I noticed gas spraying out of primer housing when the primer (choke) was pulled out, BAD situation. I ordered primer repair kit, pulled carburetor, cleaned it, and installed the repair kit, re-installed carburetor. Motor now starts on second pull, and no more gas where it shouldn't be.
