Problem fixed: visibly worn prop shaft seal, few drops of water visible when draining lower unit. Engine possibly running hot as well

Barn-find engine that had not been run or serviced for 15+ years. I was glad to find Crowley Marine as a source for information and parts, they will definity be my go-to source based on my first experience buying parts from them. First repair is water pump replacement and full lower unit seal replacement. The only special tool I needed was a seal puller, otherwise this job can be completed with typical shop tools. Loosen bolts slowly to avoid breaking any stuck ones. Lots of videos online showing how to do this job.

I’d describe my experience sub par with the website. At first all was great and they had everything in stock so it was able to ship out the same day. I did the standard shipping, thinking I’d have it within the 5 days, though day 5 came and I still had nothing. I called in on the 5th day and they had informed me that nothing had been scanned since it left their warehouse on the first day and that the postal service had lost the package. The gentleman on the phone was nice and was able to duplicate the order right then. Since it was a Saturday he mentioned it would be expedited out first thing in the morning on Monday as everything in the order was in stock. I was understanding of this, and didn’t have a problem with the whole thing as it was out of their hands. Monday rolls around and I see or hear of no confirmation that it had been shipped out so I called late that afternoon to verify that it would be shipped out that day and was told it would go out that afternoon since it was expedited as promised first thing. Tuesday rolls around and I still haven’t heard anything. So I call again. I’m told it would go out that day. Late morning Tuesday I finally receive notice it had been shipped, two days later I receive my package. All parts were correct and what was ordered, but I’m a little dissatisfied with the response time as to when things would be shipped and when I’m told something would be expedited it’s not. -Expedite: to accomplish promptly. Nothing about the experience was prompt. It took nearly two weeks to receive the order.

Problem fixed: Lower unit failed pressure test. Black oily substance from weep holes.

Bought motor used but running condition as a back-up. Decided to service the lower unit and have it readily available. Saw signs of quick fixes. One good, the others--no. Shift rod had spiral grooves like a barber pole and knew an attempt was made to re-seal "something." Gear case lube a little dark but not burnt. Thread tape used on fill and vent plugs distorted the threads in the lower unit so the pressure tester fitting/lube filler wouldn't seal and it was rough to turn. No metal chips on magnet. Used a 3/8" x 16 NC die to clean up the fitting and the same size tap dipped in white grease to help straighten the threads in the gear case. Removed the solenoid housing cap and noticed the correct replacement o-ring was floating on the shift rod between the housing underside and the plunger index key on the shift rod. Not a great place to keep a spare. Finished the seal job which included cleaning and polishing sealing surface areas and replaced shims. Found good used replacement plugs in the parts cabinet and passed pressure and vacuum test with no problem. Greatest tool is patience, methodology and proper cleaning. That's why it takes me longer to make repairs.

Problem fixed: had set a couple of years so I decided to check impeller lower unit oil had water in it.

Read repair manual. Drained lower unit & it had water in the oil. I disconnected the shift linkage below carb put in reverse first so when you put lower unit back on you can turn your prop to align drive shaft splines. Pulled apart impeller assembly & found impeller was junk. Ordered new housing & everything that was associated with it also ordered 2 seals for driveshaft they are located underneath impeller housing. Lube drive shaft splines &lube up plastic guides for water tubes & lube the grommets for water tubes on impeller housing. Have some body help you & slide unit back into place. Remember to lube impeller housing with light grease or oil. When installing impeller into housing with housing upside down turn impeller in a counter clockwise direction . Align key way on impeller & driveshaft when installing pump housing. tighten bolts & fill unit from the lower plug until it comes out top plug make sure lower unit is level connect shift linkage. When working on unit make sure the end of shift linkage does not turn so it won't be out of adjustment when you put into gear. FYI I'm a mechanic for 25+ years but this is the first time working on outboard engine.
