Thanks Mr Crowley A suggestion. The 70-100+ HP Merc 2 stroke legs appear to be the same as the “Command Thrust” legs on the 4 stoke 60 hp etc. I have 2 75 HP 2007 two strokes, which are back working. 2 strokes are becoming very unpopular. Indeed they are being band from sale in this country and the EU and…. Mercury could but will not offer a 4 stoke upgrade kits, but cheap people like me would be interested since throwing away the legs, props, tilt motors cylinders, controls etc. seems a complete waste, even Un-Green! Crowley could offer conversion kits starting with reconditioned 4 stroke power heads. As for experiences. a f The enviroment. Unlike my yacht diesel which I consider a capital investment to be maintained and kept with available spare parts, I have always considered outboards to a consumer items. That in part is based on living in a first world country like Australia where everyone want to be a rent seeker or worse such as some lower less literate life form like a lawyer. It is easer to find a brain surgeon than an outboard mechanic. I have two 2007 75 hp two stroke Mercs on a catamaran. The problem One of them apparently seized. We dragged it out of the water and took it off to the place that sold the motors almost a decade ago. Not worth fixing. Too hard. Don’t sell Mercs any more, can sell you two new motors, was the response. Hmm might just go to the trouble of finding out what’s wrong with this thing, so I built a crane next to my jetty and took off the power head and quickly concluded that the bottom big end bearing had collapsed and bits of it were jammed between the top of the piston and the cylinder head. Apparently caused by a blocked carburettor jet, despite water separators filters etc. No fuel = no lubrication = …. A few gaskets and a new bearing was all that was required. No cylinder wall damage. Some tips on how to get this thing back together. Forget the manual’s instructions for getting the pistons back in the block. It might work if you took all the pistons off the crank shaft. Three bits of plastic drainage pipe slit with cable ties work as piston ring compression tools, which will fit in the block and its impossible to get a standard ring compression tool in the block. A couple of 8 mm bolts screwed into the flywheel and a bit of right angle works as a lifting tool.
