External Sensors
Sensor inputs and internal EMM controllers are used to control outboard operation. Use Evinrude Diagnostics software to troubleshoot the sensors. Refer to the Fault Code Chart at the back of this manual for a complete list of all engine fault codes.
The EMM provides a 5 V DC signal for sensor circuits. It monitors all sensor voltage inputs and compares them to predetermined acceptable ranges. Inputs that fall outside of the acceptable range create fault codes.

If the EGT sensor circuit fails (exhaust temperature less than 60°F (20°C) for 5 seconds), the EMM:
Stores fault code 134
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the EGT sensor temperature value exceeds:

Low Oil Level Switch
The low oil switch monitors the oil level in the oil tank.
If the oil level falls below 25% capacity, the EMM:
Engine Monitor: OIL display ON
After LOW OIL is displayed, the EMM counts oil pump pulse cycles again. When it reaches 20,000 pulses, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 117
Engine Monitor: OIL display ON
To recover from S.A.F.E. mode:
• Oil level must be above 25%
• The warning resets after three oil pump pulse cycles when the outboard has been stopped and restarted.
If outboard has been run for more than 5 hours with NO OIL faults (codes 34, 36 or 117), the EMM:
Activates SHUTDOWN
Stores fault code 33
Engine Monitor: OIL display ON
Oil Level Sensor
The oil level sensor monitors the oil level in the oil tank and provides information to a digital gauge display. Due to the contour of the on-engine oil tank, oil level accuracy may vary up to 5% as oil is consumed from the tank.
If the oil level sensor signal falls BELOW range, the EMM signals:
Stores fault code 112
If the oil level sensor signal is ABOVE range, the EMM:
Stores fault code 113
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Ribs spaced on the flywheel mark crankshaft position. As the ribs pass the magnetic field of the CPS, an AC voltage signal is generated. The EMM uses this signal to identify crankshaft position and speed, generate a tachometer signal, and control fuel and ignition timing.
If the sensor is damaged or the signal is intermittent:
• Below 2000 RPM: 5 occurrences
• Above 2000 RPM: 1 occurrences the EMM:
Stores fault code 16
Approximate air gap between CPS and flywheel encoder ribs is 0.073 (1.85 mm).
Use the Evinrude Diagnostics software Monitor screen to check CPS operation. The software should show an RPM reading while the outboard is cranking. If the CPS or its circuit fails, no RPM reading will appear and the outboard cannot run.
Knock Sensor
Knock sensors (one per cylinder head) detect the presence of knock (pre-ignition or detonation) during the combustion cycle.
When knock is detected, the EMM temporarily increases fuel flow and retards ignition timing for the affected cylinder.
If knock continues, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 1-6 (code indicates cyl)
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the EMM detects the knock sensor circuit is OPEN, the EMM.
Stores fault code 7 (port sensor)
Stores fault code 8 (starboard sensor)
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
Internal EMM Functions
ROM Verification
The EMM performs a self-test of programming every time it is turned ON. Fault code 15 indicates a programming (software) issue. Reprogram the EMM with the correct software program to correct the problem.
Start Assist Circuit (SAC)
When the ignition key is ON, the EMM Start Assist Circuit (SAC) boosts battery voltage (12 V) to 30 V on the system (55 V) circuit.
If the SAC circuit current exceeds 2 Amps, or if the SAC voltage is less than 20 V, the EMM:
Stores fault code 77
Idle Controller
The idle controller reacts to engine operating conditions. Fuel and ignition timings are altered to maintain a specific RPM when engine is cold or warm. The controller is inactive when the TPS is advanced from idle position.
Electronic Throttle Controller
Refer to Electronic Throttle Controller on p. 84
Electronic Shift Controller
Refer to Electronic Shift Controller on p. 86.
Dynamic Power Steering
Refer to Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) on p. 301.
RPM Limiter
This feature of EMM programming prevents engine damage due to excessive RPM.
At 6250 RPM, fuel and ignition to the cylinders is shut off. Normal operation resumes when engine RPM returns to the specified range.
Neutral RPM Limiter
This feature prevents engine damage due to excessive RPM if accelerated in NEUTRAL. Neutral engine speed is limited to 1100 RPM.
Engine Monitor and Warning Systems
Refer to Engine Monitor System on p. 88.
Refer to S.A.F.E. on p. 89.
Refer to Shutdown Mode on p. 89.
Fault Code Creation and Storage
Refer to the Fault Code Chart at the back of this manual for a complete list of all engine fault codes.
Step 2: Throttle, Shift and Steering Control Systems
Shift and throttle information is transmitted and received between the EMM and ICON II remote control system via a dedicated Controller Area Network (CANbus), known as the remote control network, or private network. For safety, information is also shared on a NMEA 2000 network as backup.
Sensor inputs and internal EMM controllers are used to control the operation of the outboard’s shift and throttle functions.
Use Evinrude Diagnostics software to troubleshoot the sensors. Refer to the Fault Code Chart for a complete list of all control system fault codes.
Reprogramming or replacement may be required to resolve EMM related issues.
Electronic Throttle Controller
The EMM receives inputs from the remote control via the remote control network. The EMM transmits the input signals to the Electronic Throttle Controller (ETC). The ETC processes the inputs and sends signals to the Electronic Throttle Body (ETB). The ETB converts the signals to movement of the throttle plate. The ETB consists of a motor assembly, throttle plate and two Throttle Position Sensors (TPS), “TPS A” and “TPS B”.
Each TPS receives a voltage signal from the EMM. As the throttle lever is rotated, the EMM receives a return voltage signal through a second wire. A third wire provides a ground circuit back to the EMM.
TPS A and TPS B voltages are correlated. As the throttle plate opens, TPS A voltage increases and TPS B voltage decreases. As the throttle plate closes, TPS A voltage decreases and TPS B voltage increases.
