Give these installation instructions to the future owner. They contain important information for the future service of the product.
Read installation instructions completely prior to starting work.
To the New Owner
Retain these installation instructions with your Operator's Manual. They contain installation and adjustment information for future reference.
Follow steering manufacturer's instructions to lubricate and install steering cable into motor tilt tube. Install steering connector kit provided with motor. With dual cables, use a dual cable steering kit that attaches to one motor. They are easily adjusted to remove free-play from the steering system.
To check motor alignment, position motors straight with anti-ventilation plates parallel with boat bottom. Measure between propshaft centers (A).
Measure between gearcase leading edges (B) at anti-ventilation plates (C).
Most boats require 1/4 to 3/4 in. "toe-in" (Gearcase leading edges (B) closer together than propshaft centers (A). Install tie bar as described in these instructions.
Adjust Tie Bar
Loosen locking sleeve (D) and rotate each end fitting of the tie bar EQUALLY until tie bar aligns with front steering mounting hole (E). To avoid thread damage DO NOT extend threaded ends to full length. Do not tighten locking sleeve at this time.
Install Tie Bar
Thread tie bar screw (F) into forward mounting hole (E) on the steering arm.
Begin threading locknut (G) onto screw as soon as enough thread is exposed above steering arm.
Tighten screw until round nut (H) is in solid contact with underside of steering arm. Tighten screw an additional 1/16 (60°) turn (I).
Tighten locknut (G) to a torque of 18-21 ft. lbs. (25-28 N·m) using Torque Wrench Extension P/N 912031 and torque wrench. Hold screw (F) when torquing locknut using a 9/16 in. wrench. The torque wrench extension (J) must be attached at a 90° angle to torque wrench (K) to give proper torque reading.
Attach tie bar to the other engine's steering arm using the same procedures as just completed.
Post Installation Test
After installation and adjustments are completed, check for possible interference between steering system parts and any portion of engine, boat or any accessory. To do this, turn engine from lock to lock in both running and full tilt positions. Undetected interference may result in steering system parts being broken or weakened should the engine strike an underwater object and tilt rapidly into the boat.
Proper toe-in adjustments can result in better boat performance and lower steering effort. The correct amount of toe-in for your boat and engine combination can only be achieved by making successive speedruns with varying degrees of toe-in.
To adjust toe-in rotate center sleeve (L) after each speedrun if necessary until the proper toe-in and alignment of motors is achieved.
When the toe-in is properly set, tighten the locking sleeve (D) to a torque of 10-15 ft. lbs. (13, 5-20 Nm) using wrench on flats.
Monitor cooling system water pressure while water testing boat to verify motor alignment. Incorrect alignment could cause inadequate water flow to gearcases and propellers. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock to check for smooth operation without binding.
