Problem fixed: Freebie from a friend - not running
My "friend" offered me his old Evinrude suggesting a carb kit would make it functional. Well, like most free stuff, it required carburator rebuild, fuel pump rebuild, water pump rebuild, lower seals and a significant amount of new and slightly used mechanical parts that included tiller, tansome mount, steering bracket to make it functional and fresh coat of paint to make it "handsome". However, I now have a nearly new looking motor that purrs like a kitten - VERY happy with the results.
1983 Johnson 50 HP
- Repair Difficulty:
- Easy
- Repair Time:

Problem fixed: Dirty carbs due to ethanol fuel
Overhauled two carburetors on 83 Johnson 50 HP. Had Johnson factory service manual, making it a very easy repair. All necessary parts including gaskets, seals, float, needle valve and seat, and even BB shot plug and knockout plugs were included in overhaul kits. Took a couple hours including remove and reinstall the carbs, and cleaning them out thoroughly including all orifices, jets and all passageways. Only other items needed were gaskets for air silencer cover and air silencer base.

Problem fixed: resealed lower unit
Removed lower unit and disassembled, realized that I needed a Factory Service Manual to reference for pinion gear and shift rod adjustment. I also ordered the OEM gasket sealer. Repair was completed with no leaks.
